As we start a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on your social media and digital marketing efforts from the past year and make adjustments. Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs ignore this entirely or defer it in the meantime to maintain the status quo, thinking they’ll “get around to it eventually.” Sound familiar?
While a new year and a blank slate can be exciting for people, if you’re not super organized, it can also be overwhelming to manage all of your priorities, set deadlines, and know which task to focus on first. You’re coming off the end-of-the-year rush and quickly shifting into making decisions for another year of uncertainty.
For busy eye care professionals and business owners who also handle all of the social media content for their practice, this can look like twelve months of dread and empty white space on your content calendars. Between all of your other daily clinical and business tasks, there’s very little brainpower or energy left to fill those twelve months.

“New Year, New Posts?” Not necessarily. Just because it’s a brand new year doesn’t mean you have to have all brand new ideas. In fact, it’s good practice to repurpose your content and recycle it over again — not only to save your sanity but because your audience isn’t seeing everything you post the first time around.
When it comes to your messaging, repetition is key. Long-standing research in advertising tells us that it takes three to seven impressions before a message registers. So say it again, and again, and again… and maybe then your audience will remember what you said.
Plus, when you review your content from the past year — including social posts, blogs, emails, and all — you can spark ideas for the year ahead. How? Ask yourself these questions:
1. What were my most popular posts? How can I expand on them this year?
2. What were my least popular posts? Can I modify, optimize, and re-promote them to increase their visibility and boost engagement?
3. Can I repurpose any of my top-performing hero content (e.g., blog posts, podcast episodes, videos, etc.)?
TLDR: If you’ve already posted content that performs well, reuse it and make more of the same!
Do you have any exciting events or special promotions happening this year? Mark them on the calendar! Even if they’re tentative dates, it can quickly help you fill gaps in your calendar by planning the content you’ll need to have done in advance.

This seems so simple, you’d think it didn’t need saying but it does: Ask your patients, customers, and followers what they want! One of the easiest ways to spark new content ideas is to survey your audience. Ask questions like:
1. What content topics or posts did they most enjoy?
2. What do they still need help with or want to learn more about?
3. What would they like to see from you this year?
4. What types of content do they like best (e.g., feed posts, Stories, Reels, video content, blog posts, podcasts, etc.)
You’ll not only get heaps of ideas, but you’ll feel a lot more confident generating content you know your audience will be interested in.
